Whereas it’s on your phone or on your computer, nowadays it seems we all type daily. We type at work, we type at home, we type on the toilet! And if you don’t know how to type quickly and correctly, you’re wasting a lot of time. Here are five ways for you to increase your typing speed. On your marks, set, go!
Type without looking
If you have to constantly look down to your keyboard and up to your screen, your typing speed will suffer. We’ve all been there! Looking down to find the keys and then look up and realize we made a mistake so we go back to fix it and we don’t even know where we’re at.
Fixing it is simple. Feel the “F” and the “J” key. Can you feel that long bump? Those bumps are there so you can quickly “feel” your way through your keyboard and know where you’re at without looking down. But they’re there for more than that.
The main idea behind touch type is that every key has a corresponding finger. If you place your index on the “F” and “J” keys, the rest of your hand will be close enough to every single key, with your thumbs resting on your space bar. You’ll also find the bump on the “5” of your number pad.
Your fingers should type as follow:
The great thing about this technique is that no key is too far from any of your fingers. Once you get familiar with this technique, your typing speed will definitely increase!
Use proper posture
A proper posture will make you far more comfortable and will help you type faster. Don’t let your wrists hover above the edge of your keyboard. Instead let them rest and let your fingers do all the moving. Sit up straight and try to keep your computer screen at eye level. Mechanical keyboards are also good to avoid carpet tunnel if you type a lot.
Finally, make sure to stretch and take breaks every now and then. Have you ever seen a pianists warming up? That’s because fingers can get stiff! Warm up your fingers and make sure to be healthy and comfortable so you can type faster for longer periods of time!
Practice makes perfect. That being said, you probably don’t want to start typing all the words from your dictionary to practice, right?
Fortunately, you can literally turn your practice session into games! There are a multitude of places where you can find games online to increase your speed, measure your progress and get tips, all while typing! TypingGames.Zone for instance has over 100 games exclusively based on typing.

Try a new keyboard configuration
One fun fact about modern keyboards is that the QWERTY configuration was actually designed so it would be slower to type on purpose. You see, if people typed too quickly in old typewriters, they would tend to get jammed so the QWERTY configuration was designed to slow down typists and avoid jams.
Now however we can type as fast as we want but if you’re using a configuration purposely designed to be slower, you won’t go very fast. Both the DVORAK and COLEMAK keyboard configurations are far more efficient. You can easily try them by purchasing one of those keyboards, switching the keys manually on a mechanical keyboard and even changing your phone’s keyboard!
Remember, whatever you do, all you need to do is practice. If you practice and follow these steps, you’ll be typing faster in no time!
